Over the years AVID have featured many British artists across the musical genres, from jazz with Tubby Hayes, Ronnie Scott, Jack Parnell and Stan Tracey to pop with Adam Faith, Petula Clark, Shirley Bassey and The Shadows and of course our own stab at rock n roll with Marty Wilde and Billy Fury. With this new release we welcome one of the most famous British performers of all time and someone who also became a huge star across the pond in the USA, ladies and gentlemen, may we present Mr. Tommy Steele, or perhaps more appropriately, Sir Tommy Steele. Born December 17th 1936 in Bermondsey, London, Thomas Hicks was a true East End working class boy made good, the son of a racing tipster and a factory worker. Starting out as a rock 'n' roller having been discovered at the 2i's Coffee Bar in Soho, Tommy's rise to fame was truly meteoric for those days back in the 1950s. No sooner had he struck his first rock 'n' roll hit with Rock With The Caveman in 1956, a number 13 first UK chart entry for a British rock n roll record, than he had seemingly moved on. In the late 1950s Tommy was still releasing rock 'n' roll singles and had got his first number one with "Singing The Blues" pinched from under the nose of Guy Mitchell who would also go on to have a huge hit with song. As the nation's first rock 'n' roll star he appeared on the first episode of Jack Good's Oh Boy in 1958 alongside rising young stars Cliff Richard and Marty Wilde. Tiring of his wild teenage audience Tommy began to embrace variety entertainment, from musical films to Gilbert & Sullivan to theatrical shows and even straight dramatic roles such as The Taming Of The Shrew. Here across our four classic albums we have on display a variety of Tommy's talents from his classic rock 'n' roll sides to his live stage performances and his work in the films The Tommy Steele Story and The Duke Wore Jeans.
