AVID Jazz continues with its Four Classic Album series with a re-mastered 2CD release from Miles Davis including the legendary Birth Of The Cool album, complete with original artwork, liner notes and personnel details.

For this release from jazz legend Miles Davis we have gone as far back as the late 1940s, to 1949 to be precise, when Miles took a bunch of musicians including Gerry Mulligan, Lee Konitz, Kai Winding, John Lewis, Max Roach and Kenny Clarke and into the studio to make history and turned the jazz world upside down with the legendary Birth Of The Cool album, forging the way for the cool jazz sound of the 1950s and beyond. From this moment, no one in jazz was cooler than Miles Davis. A few years earlier Miles had been playing hard bop with Charlie Parker and we thought we should select an album where we can hear what the two giants of jazz sounded like together and so we present Collectors Items where Charlie (as Charlie Chan) is featured, unusually on tenor sax, alongside amongst others, Sonny Rollins and Philly Joe Jones.
Sonny Rollins joins Miles on another of our selections, the classic Dig featuring Jackie McLean and Art Blakey. Our opening set Blue Moods finds Miles in the company of Charles Mingus and Teddy Charles and is a fine example of the cool jazz forged during the Birth Of The Cool sessions.
