The Syd Lawrence Orchestra invites you to join them for “A Night at the Movies”. From the opening roar of “Strike up the Band” to the closing shots of their epic James Bond medley, this is an album to gladden the hearts of Big Band Music lovers everywhere. The 15 tracks, running to just over an hour of music, were recorded over 3 sessions on the 17th March 2010 at Pinewood Studios. This is how albums used to be made. 19 of the finest Big Band musicians in the country in a live studio performing for real! The resulting album clearly demonstrates why this dynamic Orchestra has held the crown as “Best Big Band in the Land” for the past 12 years.
The arrangements are from the very best writers including Nelson Riddle, Roland Shaw, Billy May, Syd Lawrence, Mark Nightingale, Pete Smith, Bryan Pendleton and the Orchestra’s own Trevor Brown and Colin Skinner.
At the heart of this swinging organisation, the rhythm section led by the legendary Mike Smith at the drums will have your toes tapping from Bar one! There is some astoundingly tight section playing from the powerhouse brass section and the gorgeously slurping saxophones, and the overall sound is reminiscent of the classic Billy May Capitol Records sessions of the late 1950’s.
There are stunning solo features for star instrumentalists Colin Skinner, Ian Moffat, Trevor Brown and Mike Hope and sparkling vocals from Angie Mills, Eleanor Keenan and Chris Dean, but the highlight is undoubtedly the James Bond Medley which concludes the album. Eleven classic Bond Movie themes expertly crafted into a thrillingly climactic closing number that will send you straight back to the CD controls to play it again and again and again.
