We return to the Great American Songbook for our latest release in the highly successful Essential Collection series. Our focus on this re-mastered double CD is on the legendary Cole Porter, surely one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th Century.
Born in Indiana in 1891 it was not until the late 1920’s that he began to succeed as a songwriter. Of course, as we know, he soon made up for lost time writing a string of memorable tunes both for Broadway and for Hollywood musicals. Among the diverse roster of artists we feature covering Porter’s classic songs you will find Fred Astaire, Ethel Merman, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby Dinah Shore, Alma Cogan, Peggy Lee and believe it or not Sid James......what a right old carry on!
And just to prove that Sid wasn’t all that bad, Mr Porter performs a couple of his own songs himself, let’s just say it’s a good job his writing was better than his singing!
