Born Alma Angela Cohen in Stepney in 1932 she was one of the very first pop idols! Better known as Alma Cogan she was already a
member of the chorus in Jack Hylton’s West End show High Button Shoes at the tender age of 16! A fellow chorus member was a
young Audrey Hepburn!
She had to wait another four years before her recording career began in earnest and another year before the release of the song which
included the trademark “laugh” in her voice whilst recording “ If I Had A Golden Umbrella”. 1954 saw her first chart hit “ Bell
Bottom Blues” and 1955 her only Number One hit “Dreamboat”, both included here of course! The fifties was Alma’s decade, she
ruled over it appearing at The London Palladium, The Royal Variety Show and The Ed Sullivan Show and regularly topping
Magazine popularity polls.
